Is it really possible to run a profitable side-hustle business without getting stressed?

If you had asked me this question a few years ago, I would have said ‘definitely not’.

The idea of running a business on the side, while engaged in a full time 9–5 job sounds very crazy. But you know what, particularly in this generation, close to 50% of millenials seem to have a side hustle business. I looked at some stats the other day and found that the major reason for most people who started a side-hustle business is to have disposable income. So the whole thing just came back to money.

How can you grow a profitable side-hustle business with the limited time you have?

I have monitored this space for a while. The first obvious problem is that a side hustle business owner is only available evenings and weekends. If you have a 9–5 job, then any customer inquiries or requests that come in during the weekday will just have to wait till evening, unless you’re the type that uses your lunchbreak at work to do business. (not ideal but some do it).

The second issue, resulting from the limited time you have as a side hustler is delayed responses. By the time you are able to pick up customer inquiries later in the day, they probably moved on already. Ouch! Imagine feeling excited a potential customer reached out to you but you were not available to reply that message or respond to their questions on time. This is why anyone who looks after their business full time has their advantage of you. They have the quick response advantage.

The third challenge is that tasks pile up for you and you’re struggling to get them done at night or over the weekend. This is so counter work-life balance! Not only are you eating into your rest and relaxation time, you won’t even get much productivity then, as customers are not in their buying mood at those odd times.

So what is the answer to this question? Can you really really own and operate a side-hustle business and grow it into a profitable one?

I say yes! But, you’re going to need to employ someone or something to do most of the work for you until when you become more available. If you’re a solopreneur or you’re in the early days of your business, hiring someone is not a good option as you may not necessarily have the funds to. The reason these two points are so crucial is because the first contact with a customer must be taken seriously. Any delays just means that the customer will walk away and may never come back. And this is why a lot of businesses miss opportunities because they are not only available, but they don’t have a system to work for them.
